Author E.B. White On ‘The Meaning Of Democracy’
November 7, 2012In his victory speech Tuesday night, President Obama said that democracy in a nation of 300 million can be “noisy and messy and complicated.” That sentence reminded Melissa Block of an anonymous editorial published in The New Yorker in 1943, written by E.B. White. Included in White’s take on the subject: “Democracy is the recurrent suspicion that more than half of the people are right more than half of the time.”
